Breastfeeding mom reprimanded in court – by the judge

A Michigan mom who was awaiting her turn in court breastfed her 5-month-old baby and was told it wasnt appropriate. Natalie Hegedus kept her son out of daycare on her court date because he was sick with a fever. After waiting in the courtroom for two hours, she finally breastfed her hungry baby.
Hegedus originally shared her experience on Baby Center, and then it spread like wildfire. She told Wood TV 8, Sitting all the way in the back, I decided I was just going to breast feed him Sitting there, he latched on. Everythings discreet, my shirt covered everything.
No matter. Apparently, her decision to breastfeed her baby in the courtroom wasnt acceptable to everyone present. An employee wrote a note There is a woman breastfeeding in court that was passed to the judge. According to Baby Center, The Honorable Robert T. Hentchel asked Hegedus whether she thought a courtroom was an appropriate place to breastfeed.
Hegedus responded that she felt her actions were appropriate: Her baby was hungry, she was discreet and it wasnt illegal. However, she claims that Judge Hentchel responded, My court, my law and I feel it is.
Hegedus says she was humiliated and cried for hours after the incident.
While Judge Hegedus didnt respond to Wood TV 8, the chief judge did, dismissing the incident as no big deal. Im not defending this judge, I just dont think it is a story, Chief Judge Paul Hamre told the new station. This is abuse of the information age. A one-to-two sentence exchange has now turned into a national story.
Perhaps it was a two line exchange, but isnt that beside the point? Another nursing mom, who did nothing wrong, was made to feel badly for breastfeeding her baby. It should be a national story so that it no longer occurs.
