One may think that once you reach adulthood that you will never be faced with acne again. That is a nice thought. However, for many adult this is a myth. Many adults still have acne on a regular basis. Why? Here

are a few facts about adult acne, such as the causes and some treatment options.

The facts about acne

• Acne is described as any type of pimple or breakout.
• 50% of all women develop acne at some point.
• Over 17 million people suffer from acne
• 80% of people from the ages of 11 to 30 suffer from acne
• 20% of adult women will seek dermatologist treatment for acne
• The areas that are most prevalent for acne in adults are: the chin, the neck and the jaw

Cause of adult acne

• Stress
• Hormones
• Genetics
• Discontinuing of medications (especially birth control pills or hormones)
• Allergic reactions to cosmetics, creams or lotions
• Side effects to some medications such as cortisone or some anti-seizure medications
• Diet (may play a small role, especially if you eat a lot of diary products)

Treating adult acne

Treating adult acne can be a little more complicated to treat than treating teenage acne. Adult faces may have acne problems, yet they may also be prone to dryness and even the beginning stages of wrinkling. For this reason some of the problems that an adult used as a teenager may not be appropriate to use now. Some of the treatment options worth considering may be:

• Benzyl Peroxide
• Antibiotics
• Chemical peels (professionally done)
• Laser Therapy

If the acne is a major problem and isn’t just a small little breakout that happens monthly during your cycle, you may want to consider seeking the help of dermatologist to help you decide on what is the best treatment option for you and your type of skin.
